Airlines are changing their routes to become shorter to save fuel

Flights are to become shorter in a move to save fuel in a bid to help airlines save money after already facing £3 billion in losses this year.

European journeys could be cut by between 3 – 4 minutes and trans Atlantic routes to for example New York from London by as much as 18 minutes.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA), the airline trade body has agreed the move with air traffic controllers.

IATA said that the average European flight is 30 miles longer than necessary due to detours often to avoid military airspace. The industry now hoped to come to agreements with the armed forces to allow civilian aircraft to use their airspace, which in fact accounts for about 5% currently.
