Only one free piece of hand luggage allowed

Ryanair has announced a new condition that will penalise any flyer with too much hand luggage to fit in a single carry on bag.

The fine will mean anyone taking more than one piece of hand luggage will have to pay 30 Euros and if they refuse they will not be allowed to board. Passengers will need to ensure they can carry laptop plus snacks plus reading material and any other crucial items into a single bag and pay either the advance charge of 10 Euros when checking in online or 20 Euros at the airport.

Ryanair say they have introduced this additional charge to stop the growing numbers of passengers who they feel are abusing the hand luggage “privilege”. The airline says that some passengers are attempting to carry as many as five pieces of “hand luggage” onboard. Passengers flying with Ryanair are subject to charges of 15 Euros for each extra kilogram above the current combined luggage allowance of 15kg.

The airline’s shareholders are putting the directors under pressure to ensure they devise new ways of making money from their customers but still remain a cheap alternative to other airlines. Ryanair lost 102million Euros in the three months to the end of December, during the same period last year they announced a profit of 35million Euros.
