Australian man charged in connection with a 'hoax' bomb at Gatwick airport

An Australian man Matthew Carney, 22 from Melbourne, Victoria has been remanded in custody after appearing at Crawley magistrates via a video link on suspicion of being involved in a bomb hoax.

Police were alerted after a passenger found a note implying that there was a suspicious device on board the Emirates flight from Dubai just 10 minutes before landing.

The plane a Boeing 777 landed safely and all 164 passengers and 18 crew were evacuated. Gatwick airport was then closed for 15 minutes for both in and outbound flights while the plane was thoroughly searched by the explosive ordnance disposal unit.

The airport was re-opened shortly after the incident yesterday.
