Costs force low budget airline to reduce flights

Ryanair cuts its routes from Manchester airport.

Ryanair has announced it will cut its routes from Manchester from ten to one after the airport said it was unable to cut its landing charge from £3 per passenger. This low price offered by the airport was rejected and the airline will now withdraw its routes leaving the airport with 44 less flights a week, affecting up to 600,000 passengers a year. The cuts will begin in October and the routes affected are –

Manchester to Barcelona, Bremen, Cagliari, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Milan and Shannon.

Many airports have been offering budget airlines very low landing charges and often free access to keep the high numbers of passengers flowing through its doors, for some smaller regional airports it is imperative that passenger numbers remain high as the higher level of traffic helps to keep their airports in profit through retail and parking sales. The industry figure for optimum passenger numbers to increase airport spending is five million and above.

Ryanair will open a new base out of Leeds Bradford airport, owned by a private equity firm Bridgepoint, and says it will continue to increase routes and traffic through lower cost options. The withdrawal from Manchester could mean the loss of up to 600 jobs in the area.

The Civil Aviation Authority figures show that many regional airports are currently showing passenger levels at around and above 5 million; Manchester currently has 20 million passengers a year.
