Stricken airline to ask staff to accept pay cuts

Aer Lingus, which has been making a loss in today’s difficult trading conditions, has asked that its staff take pay cuts if they are earning more than £32,400 per annum. This was one of the ways that the stricken airline hopes will help cut its operating costs along with a move to cut its workforce by 700, the airline currently employs 3,900 staff and operational and support areas will lose the most job positions. Around 666 people have already lost their jobs with another 151 staff lined up to go.

The airline has been approached by Ryanair on two occasions in a take over bid, but has declined to accept. The latest moves are a last ditch attempt to continue trading independently. There have been job losses of more than 100 in the past and bosses have not ruled out compulsory redundancies and more staff cuts.

The airline hopes to make savings of 97 million Euros by the end of 2011 and hopes to do this by cutting staff and staff benefits. If the airline trims its flight schedule and changes working practices it would lead to almost 490 “surplus positions”.
