Scanners and "no fly" lists
It has emerged that two “watch lists” will be created with data held on the UK Border Agency’s database of foreign criminals, illegal immigrants and terrorist suspects. The no-fly list will be drawn up to strengthen border security along with a ban on flights from Yemen to Britain. The Prime Minister said that he had agreed with Yemenia Airlines that their flights should be suspended for a period pending the necessary security updates. The carrier had been flying into Heathrow from Sanaa via Cairo twice a week.
The Prime Minister has announced a series of moves in a statement to the Commons after he had seen a review of how the present list of watch lists could be improved. The implementation of the electronic borders scheme which checks passenger’s pre flight is part of the new improved checks to thwart terrorism since the attempted bombing of a flight over Detroit at Christmas. The e-borders scheme will cost £1.2billin and will be implemented at all major airports and coastal ports and require all passengers to give details of their identity including any criminal convictions
There is also to be an increase in two new teams from MI5 and MI6 and GCHQ. The new teams would investigate suspects who are travelling to Britain before they reach here.
One no fly list will contain the names of those who are categorically prohibited from travelling to and from Britain, the second would be a much longer list and contain the names of peoples who pose a lower risk but will need to be carefully screened. Full body scanners will now be used at Heathrow from the end of January.
