New airport security measures in place : February 2010 : Strike action to cause flight disruptions

New owners have no plans to extend

The Global Infrastructure Partners US based fund that owns Gatwick airport has said it has no plans to build a second runway for at least 10 years.

The chairman of Gatwick Sir David Rowlands said that the new owners had no interest in building the additional runway and went on to say that even if the Government felt it was necessary they “would have to think very hard about spending £100 to £200 million on a planning application with an uncertain decision”. This will please local environmental groups who had feared that the new owners would launch plans to expand the airport and upgrade its single runway status.

The Government has said it would support an additional runway at Heathrow airport by 2020 although the decision is to be challenged at the High Court later this month. Stansted airport is another airport under pressure to increase its capacity as the south east has experienced higher levels of growth in air traffic than other areas of the UK. Stansted airport is currently facing an up hill battle with planning for its additional runway and an increase in the number of runways at Gatwick is seen as a way of by passing the problems at Stansted.
