Stoppages will affect flights over half term

British Airways is bracing itself for a further set of strikes by some of its union members. Almost a million BA passengers could be affected by the new walk outs which will be held over the busy Whitsun Bank Holiday weekend and school half term holidays. The five day walk outs will begin on Tuesday 18th May until 22nd May inclusive followed by another walk out on the 24th to 28th May. The walk outs stretch in to June with the first stoppage from May 30th to June 3rd and June 5th to 9th.

Cabin crew have rejected a peace offer from BA and the airline has decided to put together a detailed contingency plan that would counter most of the disruption to their flights. Heathrow airport will be the most affected according to BA, with minimal disruption to Gatwick and London City airport.

Unite, the union representing the striking workers, recommended that the workers reject the deal put forward to them because they are refusing to reinstate 50 cabin crew suspended during the last strikes and are refusing to reinstate perks to those who took part in the disruption during March when they held a seven day strike.

BA said it was saddened but not surprised that the union had decided to continue the stoppages but it was confident that its crew would ignore the call to strike. BA said it had lost in the region of £43 million during the last stoppage.
