Gatwick meet and greet car park firm wins safety award : August 2010 : Ryanair adds new Gatwick services this winter

Amidst flight cancellations, Mexico’s struggling national carrier has finally returned to Gatwick.

Mexicana, the struggling Mexican national carrier, has resumed services from London’s Gatwick Airport. Flights are occasionally being cancelled as the airline tries to get back on a stable footing. Mexicana has offered a London-Mexico City flight since October, 2008, but the flight was one of 18 suspended by the airline just a few weeks ago as it attempted to cut its operating costs. As of the middle of last week, Mexicana had resumed operations out of London and Madrid.

The airline issued a statement saying that flights would be reduced to a minimum for many days, as the airline and its staff try to continue operations in order to support passengers. Mexicana has been in negotiations with union heads in a bid to find an arrangement that can help secure the airline’s future viability. The outbreak of swine flu in Mexico last year led to a calamitous drop in passenger numbers and the airline has debts totalling more than £628 million.

A recent statement on the airline’s website does not bode well. The airline entered bankruptcy protection about at the beginning of August but it needs to restructure operations and finances very soon if it is to survive. Agency and online sales of flight tickets also resumed but the carrier is juggling weak cash flow against a much-reduced schedule. If the 89 year-old carrier fails, it will mark the end of North America’s oldest surviving airline.
