Engineers have discovered further problems on three more of the Rolls-Royce engines powering A380s in the Qantas fleet.

Qantas engineers have found more problems on three Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines that power other six A380s in the airline’s superjumbo fleet. The Qantas CEO announced on Monday that the carrier’s A380s would, therefore, remain grounded for several days more.

The Australian airline initially grounded all six its Airbus A380 superjumbos after an engine on one of the craft suffered a major failure shortly after departing from Singapore. The flight, which had been headed for Sydney, had to return to Singapore. Pieces of broken engine cowling and internal engine parts apparently showered Indonesia’s Batam Island. The plane landed safely at Singapore without any injuries to crew or passengers.

Each remaining engine on the six A380s in the Qantas fleet were checked for eight hours over the weekend but more problems were found. CEO Alan Joyce said engineers discovered oil where it is not supposed to be on three engines. Hs said the three engines were found to be suffering oil leaks during the tests and added out that these are new engines that should not experience such ‘issues at this stage’.

Both Singapore Airlines and Lufthansa also fly Airbus A380s using the Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engine. Though they, too, grounded their A380s, the planes went back into service after checks found no signs of problems.
