The future of the famous marijuana cafe could be in doubt.

There are fears for the future of the infamous coffee shops of the Netherlands after the government threatened to make them off-limits to foreigners. The cafes, in cities like Amsterdam, have long been considered a true getaway destination for fans of cheap, high-quality marijuana.

This tradition, made famous in many films, could be about to end. The Dutch justice minister is planning to prohibit foreigners from purchasing marijuana in Dutch coffee shops.

Every year, one million Brits travel to Amsterdam. The ease with which visitors can purchase cannabis in many different forms in places like Amsterdam is one of the big attractions.

Justice minister Ivo Opstelten said tourists are welcome in the Netherlands but not just to go to the country’s coffee shops. He said that if they can work out the processes involved, these coffee shops should soon be off-limits to tourists.

The justice ministry confirmed the minister’s statement. The new coalition government has vowed to implement the new rule under the current parliament. For years, British tourists have been able to use convenient weekend tours to Amsterdam and its coffee shops. The package deals have unashamedly been targeted at cannabis aficionados.
