Gatwick Airport’s use of social media has won it an award for innovation.

Gatwick Airport has won an award for its innovative application of social media. The Innovation in Online Customer Service award was presented at Econsultancy Innovation Awards 2010.

The award is given in recognition of innovation and best practice in the digital industry. An international panel judged the award winner.

The panel included representatives of organisations such as the BBC, eBay and Mercedes Benz. The panel picked Gatwick because it provided what was described as likely to be the ‘most holistic’ implementation of social media from a customer-focused business.

Gatwick wins the award a year after new owners took over at the Sussex airport. Spanish-owned operators BAA were forced to sell Gatwick to settle anti-competition concerns.

The airport was sold for £1.51 billion to an international consortium of investment funds. Global Infrastructure Partners is the group’s majority shareholder.

The new owners are investing almost a billion pounds in Gatwick over the next three years. The investment is aimed at boosting the customer experience at Gatwick for both passengers and airlines.

At the end of the investment programme, departing passengers should find both check-in and security are easier. Retailing should also be enhanced and more departures should be on-time.
