The City of London says there is an urgent need to expand flight capacity.

The City of London Corporation is calling for urgent expansion of aviation capacity in London. The Corporation says the expansion should be met by upgrading existing airports in the area.

The Corporation said passenger demand will rise in line with the economic recovery. It added that there is not enough time to wait while a new airport is built in the Thames estuary. Boris Johnson, the London mayor, supports building a new airport in south east England.

Stuart Fraser, Chairman of the Policy and Resources Committee for the City of London, said building a new hub airport could be a potential long-term solution. However, he added, it might be decades before such a project could be fully operational.

He went on to say that the City of London operates in a competitive environment. The talented individuals and organizations in this market are highly mobile. Neither London nor the UK can afford to do nothing while rivals around the world are building for their futures.

Before the recession, the number of passengers through airports serving London peaked at 140 million in 2007. As a result of the economic collapse, this number fell to 130 million in 2009 but demand, especially from businesses, is expected to rise again this year.
