Dozens of Britons arrived back home on a flight chartered by the UK government.

More than 70 people from the UK arrived back home from violence-hit Egypt aboard a government-chartered plane. The flight, carrying tourists, UK embassy staff and ex-pats, touched down at Gatwick airport around 9pm GMT.

A total of 76 passengers was on the plane, which was arranged by the British government. It was one of many such flights organized by governments around the world to ferry their nationals out of harm’s way after political protests continued in Cairo and several other Egyptian cities.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron held talks on the Egyptian crisis with American president Barack Obama. As the protests continued in Egypt, both Barack Obama and David Cameron repeated their calls for Egypt’s government immediately to transition to a ‘broad-based’ form of government.

Speaking via telephone, Mr Obama and Mr Cameron said that they had agreed it was vital for Egypt’s government to respond to the wishes of the country’s people through ‘reform, not oppression’. Details of the talks were released in a statement from Downing Street.

According to the statement, Mr Cameron had welcomed the ‘restraint’ demonstrated by Egypt’s army in policing recent protests. Downing Street said both Mr Cameron and US President Obama agreed that the people of Egypt had the right to determine who leads their country.
