Diners can enjoy fish, chips and a vintage DC-6 airliner at Coventry Airport.

A classic civil airliner from the 1950s has been turned into the newest restaurant available to diners at Coventry Airport. The DC-6, which used to fly passengers in the days before jets, now provides food and drinks for up to 40 paying customers at a time.

The refurbished aircraft, which was built by the Douglas Aircraft Company, last flew nearly four years ago. Today, it provides an ideal opportunity for fans of aviation to enjoy a hot lunch or dinner while seated in the plush cabin of a classic propeller-driven transatlantic airliner.

Tony Caunce is the chef behind the scheme. He has developed a menu containing a variety of creatively-named dishes that evoke images of classic military aircraft.

Diners can order dishes like the Rapide steak, the Vampire gammon or the Meteor fillet. The plane even comes with a cocktail bar, where passengers can enjoy an after-dinner cocktail before heading to the cockpit.

The restaurant has been open for two weeks. Part of the restaurant’s attraction is the opportunity to experience an era when international flight was characterised by luxury and quality.

The DC-6, as Chef Caunce points out, was built in a era of quality and solidity. He says the aircraft was engineered incredibly well, which explains why it was still being flown less than four years ago.

The new restaurant is a part of the Airbase aviation exhibition at the airport. In addition to the DC-6 and its culinary delights, visitors can see more than 30 planes once flown by Air Atlantique.
