New, faster services are being launched between the two biggest cities in the UK.

A range of faster new rail services are available for people travelling between Britain’s two biggest cities. The new services, called Mainline, are being operated by Chiltern Railways and cut the time needed to travel by rail between Birmingham and London to only 90 minutes.

The new fast services are available, thanks to upgraded engineering. Trains on the Mainline service can travel as fast as 100mph. Chiltern has also boosted capacity at car parks for key stations on the route.

The company first announced new services last week. Chiltern is introducing an airline-style class similar to the ‘premium economy’ seating available on flights.

The new class is called Business Zone and is aimed at executives. Passengers in Business Zone have to pay a £20 premium each way, with food and drink still being extra.

The quickest services on Mainline will take 90 minutes to get between Moor Street staion in Birmingham and Marylebone in London. This compares favourably with the regular journey of one hour and 58 minutes.

Getting between London Marylebone and Solihull drops from one hour and 51 minutes to one hour and 22 minutes. The trip between London Marylebone and Warwick Parkway, which normally takes one hour and 35 minutes, now takes only 70 minutes.

Adrian Shooter, chairman of Chiltern Railways, says the new Chiltern Mainline service results from the biggest private investment made in passenger rail infrastructure for more than 80 years.
