A second kidnapping in Kenya has prompted European governments to discourage travel to the African nation.

Sunday saw 66 year-old Marie Dedieu, a disabled French woman, attacked and dragged from her bungalow in the popular Lamu Archipelago near the Kenya-Somali border. The islands have become popular among celebrities and European holidaymakers in recent years though tourism is now apparently threatened by serious attacks spilling over from Kenya’s war-torn neighbour.

Dedieu is believed to be being held captive by Somali pirate groups inside Somalia after Kenya’s coastguard reported a gun battle with the gang. The gange reportedly escaped across the border via speedboat through the mangrove forests in the Ras Kamboni border area. Kenyan police said a security guard has been taken into custody in connection with the ordeal.

France and the United Kingdom have since issued travel advice urging citizens not embark on ‘non-essential’ travel to any part of Kenya within 150kms of the south-western Somali border.

The incident comes less than a month after Mr and Mrs Tebbutt, both Britons from Hertfordshire, were attacked on another island in the archipelago. Mr Tebbutt was shot and killed in the ordeal on 11 September and Mrs Tebbutt was taken and is also being held in Somali territory by pirate gangs.
