The Gatwick Express airport train will begin utilising its new smartcard gates on Monday.

The railway, which provides express service between Gatwick airport and London’s Victoria station, will open its new state-of-the-art gates early in the morning today, each of which will be staffed by the company’s dedicated Customer Service Hosts. The preliminary run comes ahead of the full launch of the gates, which is set to be initiated before 31 December.

The move will affect both stations and will mean that there will no longer be onboard options for buying Gatwick Express tickets, which its operator says comes as more and more passengers opt to purchase tickets via its website. All customers will as of Monday have to buy tickets before getting on the train and Gatwick Express says that online ticket purchases are now its preferred method of sale.

In addition to online sales, tickets for Gatwick Express are also available via vending machines at both stations as well as directly from Gatwick Express Customer Service Hosts stationed at the new gates via their handheld ticket machines. Officials also said that eight new ticket machines have been installed at Victoria and Gatwick Airport stations.

In addition, the new gates are also designed to utilise smartcard technology in the near future, the company said.
