Government officials have claimed that if British airports become too congested that airfares will rise.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said this week that overcrowding at a number of airports will limit value and choices available to the flying public if nothing is done to reduce the current strain on capacity.

The comments comes via the CAA’s Aviation Policy for Consumers report, which said that the problem was particularly apparent at Heathrow airport in south-east England, largely as a result of the recent ruling to limit expansion at the vastly overcrowded facility.

According to the report, overcrowding is likely to add £10 per ticket on to all return trips by 2030, and as much as £17 per ticket onto all return flights departing from London City Airport. Officials said that although London is well-connected at the moment that strained facilities at airports in the capital mean that they would not be able to adjust as quickly to global economic trends as easily as other primary air hubs around Europe.

Iain Osborne, the CAA’s director of regulatory policy said that data revealed in the report shows that there is no current crisis with UK connectivity but that the Government needed to recognise that situation was likely to change and to act in the best interest of consumers.
