Regulators say air traffic to push up fares : December 2011 : Turkish Airlines begins Gatwick flights

Turkey’s flag carrier has become the latest addition to Gatwick airport.

Flights between the south London facility and the company’s base in Istanbul began last week via a Turkish Airlines Airbus A321-200, which is capable of holding up to 195 passengers in a split economy- and business-class layout.

The flight departs Istanbul every day at 1050 local time and arrives at Gatwick’s North Terminal at 1250 BST. The same aircraft then returns to Istanbul several hours later, departing at 13.55 before arriving at Ataturk airport at about 1745 local time.

The launch makes the airline the only one to offer service between Gatwick and Istanbul Ataturk airport, although EasyJet offers service from Gatwick to Sabiha Gokcen Airport in Istanbul.

Turkish Airlines follows the addition of numerous other recent additions to Gatwick, as the airport’s management continues to seek out new airlines. Other new names on hand include Hong Kong Airlines, Air Asia X, Air China and Vietnam Airlines.

Chief commercial officer of Gatwick, Guy Stephenson, said that the facility was amid fierce competition with other South East and London area airports to provide the greatest variety of available destinations. He added that Gatwick currently offers in excess of 200 different routes, which he said was most offered by any other international airport in the United Kingdom.
