Today marks the start of fresh increases of up to nearly 11 per cent for fares on British railways.

The increases, which rail companies say will go toward the improvement of services, have been highlighted by consumer group Passenger Focus, which claims that consumers are having to cover costs of inefficiency by an industry that has been “fractured”.

Commuters across Britain having to return to work today via railways will on average pay 6 per cent more for each journey, although the rises are much heftier on a number of routes, which Passenger Focus has listed in its recent report.

Among season ticket fare increases for 2012, the group notes a 10.6 per cent increase for fares between Crewe and Chester and a similar figure for those travelling between Llandudno and Bangor, Gwynedd. Likewise, those travelling between Port Talbot Parkway and Swansea will face an increase of 8.7 per cent from 2011 fares.

But at the same time the watchdog group has said that it was welcoming to the fact that most unregulated fares had not seen the substantial jumps that they’ve seen in previous years.

Meanwhile, Michael Roberts, the Association of Train Operating Companies’ chief executive, said that rail services would be improved as a result of the fare rises and that the money would replace taxpayer funding that continues to be diminished on the part of the Government.
