Korean Air to serve Gatwick : January 2012 : Germany’s Intro Aviation amid talks to buy Bmibaby

Kuala Lumpur-based budget airline Air Asia X has said it will soon cease its operations to Europe and India.

The revelation came via the airline’s Facebook page on Friday; the firm said that its routes to Gatwick and Orly airports as well as to Mumbai and New Delhi would be scrapped in the effort of shifting its focus back to Australasia, Taiwan, Korea and Japan. The airline said that skyrocketing taxes and fuel prices are to blame.

The withdraw from Europe comes just after the European Commission began imposing regulations associated with its emissions trading scheme on international airlines operating within its airspace. The carbon-cutting initiative, which taxes and fines air carriers according to their carbon emissions levels, continues to meet heavy opposition from industry bodies as well as Asian, Canadian and US-based carriers.

Air Asia X’s Gatwick, New Delhi and Paris-Orly flights will end in March whilst its Mumbai route will be axed before the end of the month. The company said that passengers with reservations for flights after those times would be offered alternative flights free of charge.

Industry analysts say that with the move that Scoot, a new low-cost long-haul subsidiary of Singapore airlines, will now face even greater competition with Air Asia X. Scoot is set begin service via its initial route to Sydney in the first half of 2012, according to officials.
