Bmibaby could soon be sold to German turnaround firm Intro Aviation.

Intro’s chief executive, Peter Oncken, said to reporters late last week that preliminary initiatives towards a sale were underway after his company had expressed its interest in acquiring the low-cost British carrier from its current owner, Lufthansa.

Oncken said that right now his company was going through the books to see if a restructuring effort is a viable option for Bmibaby. He said that initial reviews show that it does appear to be possible however the company’s integration with BMI proper could bring potential problems.

Lufthansa spokesperson Claudia Lange confirmed with reporters on Friday that talks with Intro were taking place but said she was unable to provide further information at this time.

Meanwhile, Bmibaby officials have noted that it is still meeting with other potential buyers as well.

The talks come just weeks after Lufthansa announced a contract to sell BMI proper to IAG, the parent company of Spanish airline Iberia and British Airways. However, the £172.5 million deal still must gain approval from competition authorities amid outcry from competitors that IAG will be given an unfair advantage by owning more than half of the available landing slots at overcrowded Heathrow airport.
