Olympic officials have released thousands of unused hotel nights for the upcoming London 2012 games.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (Locog) had originally reserved around 600,000 rooms for staff and media, but 120,000 rooms that were not needed were released to the public at the weekend. Officials said the original two-week allotment of rooms, which range from five-star accommodation to budget properties, was set aside in 2005 under a major deal in 2005.

Paul Deighton, chief executive of Locog, said that his organisation had promised long ago that it would not hold onto any rooms that would not be used by the International Olympic Committee, International Sport Federations, media personnel and event workers.

Experts say the amount of released rooms is equal to about 20 per cent of London accommodation initially available to the public for the two-week Olympic period.

VisitBritain’s chief executive, Sandie Dawe, said to reporters that the release was “great news” for international visitors hoping to head to London for the Olympics and other major festivities held in the region throughout the summer. She added that it was a “timely boost” that would help to shape London’s tourism Legacy in the wake of the Olympic Games.
