US carrier Delta Air Lines has announced it will soon scrap its Gatwick route in favour of Heathrow airport.

Officials for the airline said this week that the company would be axing its daily flight from its Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson International Airport hub to south London’s Gatwick airport starting 18 April, and on the same day would launch a new flight from Atlanta to the larger facility at Heathrow.

Delta said that it would be utilising one of its Boeing 767-400 models for the new service, which will feature a flatbed first class cabin. According to Delta spokesman Trebor Banstetter, the company hopes the move will satisfy the business class market by providing quicker access to inner London as well as to a greater network of flights for improved connectivity to continental Europe and other regions.

Delta’s senior VP fort Middle East, North Africa and Europe, Perry Cantarutti said in a statement that a second daily flight between Atlanta and Heathrow would give UK consumers increased access to more than 150 destinations across North America, the Caribbean and Latin America from the firm’s US hub.

The announcement comes just ahead of the launch of a new 12-gate Delta-specific terminal at Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson International Airport.
