The creator of the Fireman Sam cartoon was recently detained at Gatwick airport over remarks he made at security.

Sixty-seven-year-old David Jones was passing through security screening with his two daughters last Monday when he reportedly questioned a security agent about how he would be treated if his scarf were over his head.

Jones was placing his scarf into the screening bin when he made the comments and said he was subjected to an ‘Orwellian nightmare’, noting that the Muslim woman before him was allowed to proceed without removing the hijab from her head and face.

The retired fireman said that he was then taken aside for more than an hour after a Muslim security agent overheard his comments and became upset. He said that airport officials and a policeman and even an agent from British Airways repeatedly asked him to apologise during the standoff.

Jones said that he was “adamant” that he did not need to apologise because he hadn’t done anything wrong, citing that the comment was not related to the woman’s religion but rather the fact that she was able to pass through without showing her face to security agents. He said that he had told the police officer involved that he demanded to be arrested if there was a case against him but said the man had taken sides with security personnel.
