Avis ready to open 70th China branch : March 2012 : Flybe to launch new routes

Iceland’s flag carrier has announced new flights to and from Gatwick airport.

The airline said this week that it would begin two weekly flights between the south London gateway and Keflavik International Airport outside of the Icelandic capital of Reykjavik on 18 October.

Officials from the Icelandair said that the flight times have been carefully chosen to allow Londoners to take advantage of wintertime city breaks in Iceland highlighted by renowned views of the Northern Lights, as well as to take advantage of great connections to popular North American destinations including New York, Denver, Boston and Seattle.

The flights will depart Gatwick airport each Thursday and Saturday; the service will utilise a Boeing 757-200 aircraft capable of carrying up to 189 travellers in three classes.

Gatwick chief commercial officer, Guy Stephenson, said that the airport’s management was excited to become a key part of Icelandair’s expansion plans in the British capital. He added that the new flight would provide a “wonderful opportunity” for Britons to experience Iceland and tap into the carrier’s key connections to attractive destinations in the United States.

Likewise, Icelandair chief executive Birkir Holm Gudnason said that the move comes as a result of steadily increasing demand for winter travel from London.
