A new report has raised concerns regarding detection operations at Gatwick airport.

Officials from the Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration said in the study published this week that more than 70 per cent of searches observed at the airport’s North Terminal during a recent observation period were unjustified.

The figures include strip searches, according to the report. The document also said that some individuals were arrested at security checkpoints in spite of the fact that searches did not uncover illegal contraband. Additionally, the report's authors also said that many white travellers were stopped in the effort of making sure there was a proper “racial mix”.

John Vine said on behalf of the Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration that the study also revealed that one in every seven travellers arriving on temporary visas did not fulfil all of the entry requirements or absconded. However, he later said that many things were being done properly, including the swiping of every traveller’s passport. He also said that officers were refusing entry for some passengers based solely on “sound decisions”.

Meanwhile, immigration minister Damian Green said in a statement that he was aware of the problems at the airport but that government officials were working to find ways to improve the scenario.
